Making Liquid Bubble Bath Base Using the Hot-Process Method

!±8± Making Liquid Bubble Bath Base Using the Hot-Process Method

Many people are beginning to experience the rewards of making their own homemade bubble bath. The base ingredient for bubble bath is liquid soap, and liquid Castile soap is most commonly used for this purpose. ("Castile soap" is a term which originally referred to soap made from olive oil, but it is now used to refer to pretty much any soap made from vegetable oil as opposed to animal fats.) You can purchase liquid Castile soap, or if you are feeling up to a slight challenge, you can experience the satisfaction of making your own liquid soap.

Liquid Castile soap can be made via either the cold-process or hot-process method. Many soap-makers prefer the hot process method because it is much quicker, and after three to four hours of "cooking" the soap in a crock pot, it is completely saponified, whereas the cold-process method requires the soap to be cured for six to eight weeks before the saponification process is complete. (Saponification is the process by which lye chemically reacts with water and oil to make soap.)

Of the two varieties of lye, potassium hydroxide lye is favored by most soap-makers for liquid soap, because the soap yielded by this compound is softer and easier to melt than soap made with sodium hydroxide lye.

To make liquid Castile soap via the hot-process method, mix the oils and lye just as you would if you were making cold-process soap, and blend until the mixture reaches trace. Be patient - this may take a while, and when trace is reached the batter may be thinner than it normally would be. This is a normal result of using the potassium hydroxide lye, instead of sodium hydroxide.

When the soap batter does reach trace, start cooking it in a double-boiler or crock pot, over low to medium heat, for three to four hours. The mixture will go through many stages, during the last of which is will be translucent and creamy.

To see if the liquid soap is done, mix one ounce of the soap with two ounces of boiling water. If the mixture is clear, or only slightly cloudy, then the soap is done, but if it is milky or very cloudy, the soap needs to cook longer. (If cooking longer doesn't solve the problem, then one of your ingredients may have been measured improperly prior to starting the process.)

Consider adding a preservative, such as grapefruit seed extract or vitamin E, to your liquid soap when it is done cooking, and prior to packaging it, as liquid soap is more prone to spoilage than bar soap. At this point, the liquid soap is ready to be incorporated into your liquid bubble bath recipe.

Buying ready-made liquid Castile soap, such as Dr. Bronner's, is certainly an option, and is often chosen by people who aren't inclined to make their own for whatever reason.

However, if you do choose to make your own liquid bubble bath base from scratch, you will enjoy a sense of accomplishment, and have a greater degree of control over your ingredients and the customization of your soap.

Are There Toxic Chemicals in Your "ORGANIC" Personal Care Products?

!±8± Are There Toxic Chemicals in Your "ORGANIC" Personal Care Products?

The Organic Consumers Association has stated that many so-called "organic" or "natural" product brands were actually made with toxic chemicals such as 1,4-dioxane, Olefin Sulfonate, and Amdiopropyl Betaine.

Recently, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court against a number of personal care brands to force them to stop making misleading organic labeling claims. Companies sued by Dr. Bronner's include Estee Lauder, Ecocert, OASIS, Stella McCartney's CARE, Jasön, Avalon Organics, Nature's Gate, Kiss My Face, Ikove and others. Each of the companies being sued is using potentially dangerous chemicals that certainly don't qualify as natural or organic, according to Dr Bronner's.

The products include shampoo, body wash, liquid soap, skin cleansers and other personal care products. It seems that many of the companies in the "organic" products industry are flatly dishonest, and they're jumping on the organic bandwagon as a clever tactic to make a quick buck rather than formulating their products with genuinely honest organic ingredients that put consumer health first.

The major cleansing ingredient in Jason "Pure, Natural & Organic" liquid soaps, body washes and shampoos is Sodium Myreth Sulfate, a corrosive de-greaser which is cumulative in the body and is listed as hazardous on the data sheets that the US government puts out on chemicals.

The major cleansing ingredient in Avalon "Organics" soaps, bodywashes and shampoos,
Cocamidopropyl Betaine, contains conventional non-organic chemicals combined with the petrochemical Amdiopropyl Betaine. Nature's Gate "Organics" main cleansers are Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Kiss My Face "Obsessively Organic" cleansers main ingredients are Olefin Sulfonate (a pure petrochemical) and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Juice "Organics", Giovanni "Organic Cosmetics", Head "Organics", Desert Essence "Organics", and Ikove "Organic" all use CocamdiopropylBetaine. Betaine is a common cleansing ingredient and no cleansers made from it can be certified organic due to its petrochemical compounds.

Ecocert is a French-based certifier that allows cleansing ingredients made from conventional and organic agriculture. It also includes, in the cleansing ingredients contained in products labeled as "Made with Organic ingredients", certain petrochemicals such as Amidopropyl Betaine. Ecocert certifies the Ikove brands' cleansing products to contain less than 50% organic content, noted in small text on the back of the product, where all cleansing ingredients are non-organic including Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Yet the product is labeled "Organic Amazonian Avocado Bath & Shower Gel".

Another instance is Stella McCartney's "100% Organic" CARE line certified by Ecocert that labels products as "100% Organic" that are not 100% Organic alongside ones that are; the labels of products that are not 100% organic simply insert the word "Active" before "Ingredients." In allowing such labeling, Ecocert ignores the requirements of its own certification standards. The primary organic content in most Ecocert certified products comes from "Flower Waters" in which up to 80% of the "organic" content consists merely of just regular tap water that Ecocert counts as "organic."

The new Organic and Sustainable Industry Standard ("OASIS")-a standard developed exclusively by certain members of the industry, primarily Estee Lauder, with no consumer input, will permit certification of products outright as "Organic" (rather than as "Made with Organic" ingredients) even if such products contain hydrogenated and sulfated cleansing ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate made from conventional agricultural material grown with synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, and preserved with synthetic petrochemical preservatives such as Ethylhexylglycerin and Phenoxyethanol. The organic content is required to only be 85%, which in water and detergent-based personal care products, means organic water extracts and aloe vera will be all that is needed to convert conventional synthetic cleansing ingredients to "organic".

The OASIS standard is not only useless but deliberately misleading to organic consumers looking for a reliable indicator of true "organic" products. Organic consumers expect that cleansing ingredients in products labeled "Organic" be made from actual organic ingredients, not conventional farming methods or chemical preservatives. Surprisingly, companies represented on the OASIS board, such as Hain (Jason "Pure, Natural & Organic"; Avalon "Organics") and Cosway (Head "Organics",) produce liquid soap, bodywash and shampoo products with petrochemicals in their cleansers even though use of petrochemicals in this way is not permitted even under the very permissible OASIS standard these companies have themselves developed and endorsed.

Organic consumers have a right to expect that the personal care products they purchase with organic label claims contain cleansing ingredients made from organic material, not conventional or petrochemical material.

Everything New is Old Again

!±8± Everything New is Old Again

I grew up in the fifties. I can still smell the Sal Suds my mother used to use in the old ringer washer that we had. (Hey, it was a step up from washing the clothes in the zinc bathtub after boiling the water on the kerosene stove.) So, I was so happy when I found Sal Suds back in the 70's when I first started to be more conscious of what I was putting into the environment.

My mother, however, was not into Sal Suds in the 70's. She was into Tide with Bleach, Dawn Dishwashing Liquid and those little scrubbing bubbles that got the soap scum off the tub and looked so cute in commercials. Mom couldn't understand why I wanted to "go backwards" as she put it, by using old-fashioned cleaning products when there were much more effective "modern" products available.

In vain, I tried to explain to her that decades of pouring chemicals and toxins into the earth's water supply was having a horrible effect on our environment and our bodies. She didn't want to hear it. "If it was dangerous," she said, "They wouldn't let them sell it."

Well, Mom was wrong. It is dangerous and they did let them sell it, but I'm glad that I never bought into the whole "ring around the collar, bleaches whites white, get your dishes squeaky clean" wheeze. I've been using Sal Suds, biodegradable earth-friendly laundry soap, shampoo and dish soap since before my kids were born.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of other people joined in, until they're now some of the hottest selling products in the world. Mom is gone, but I wonder if she would have gotten onto the natural products bandwagon if she had lived to see it.

After all, the reason she embraced the whole "better living through chemistry" idea was because she wanted to be "modern" and keep up with the times, as she put it. Well, nowadays, keeping up with the times often means going back to the basics.

I'm not against using modern technology, but I'm not going to just blindly accept it as good. Also, some of the old ways were discarded for a reason. I don't think anyone wants to go back to using yellow lye soap for baths or laundry, and you won't find me using iodine for cuts either.

But if something works and doesn't harm the environment, humans or animals, why not use it? Actually, the Sal Suds works so well that I almost don't need anything else. I even use it as a spot remover on my rugs and clothes.

The ingredients in Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds are: Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Coco-Betaine, Lauryl Glucoside, Fir Needle Oil and Spruce Oil. While I'm not a fan of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Dr. Bronner's label explains that their version uses Coco-Betaine and Lauryl Glucoside to counter the irritation that SLS can produce. Who am I to doubt them, especially since I use it and it doesn't irritate my skin at all.

It's not for slathering on your body. It's for cleaning, laundry and removing stains. It works as well as more expensive, harsh chemical cleaners. I like the smell and I like the fact that it's not wrecking the planet. Now, that's modern.

How to Create Natural Scents for Your Bath or Shower

!±8± How to Create Natural Scents for Your Bath or Shower

Some people love to take long baths luxury. Others can not wake up without a shower in the morning. You have the choice of hydrotherapy in the form of a bath or shower, is something almost everyone likes. Aroused there is nothing better for us in the morning, when a nice hot shower. And there's nothing better than to relax the body and calms the mind into a restful sleep and a bath before going to bed. It lowers the body temperature and prepares us for sleep,of course.

Scented bath salts

If I want to relax, I take a bath with these bath salts. I that since the 70s, when I sold the craft fairs. Now they make them for my pleasure. They are so easy to make the skin soft and silky. Children love to see the color of the water bath, and bath products are not children's business can be irritating.

Ingredients:

2 cups of sea salt, rock salt or kosher salt

20 drops of essential oil

Add theessential oil, salt. Spread on a baking sheet covered with aluminum foil or parchment paper. (Use paper towels to absorb any, since they are the ointment.) If it is dry, which can take up to 24 hours or as little as 3, rather than pour it into a jar with a lid. If you want colored bath salts, use a few tablespoons of beet juice, or non-toxic food dyes, salts with essential oils. You can find non-toxic food dyes, natural food stores. To operate to undermine, simplyabout a half-cup and add to running water.

Remember, scent is a very personal thing. It's wonderful to surround yourself with it in your own home. But it's considerate to keep it very light or just not use it in public.

Scented Shower Gel

Ingredients:

1 Cup Water

1 ½ Cups Liquid Glycerine Soap, Scented (Dr. Bronner's or any natural brand)

2 TBSP Finely Milled Sea Salt

Natural Food Coloring (optional)

Add liquid soap to water. Do not add water to liquid soap, because you'll have a kitchen full of suds. Stir in salt and coloring, if you want it. If it separates, shake gently before using.

Variations: Use unscented liquid soap and add about 20 drops of essential oil to it. Or add a stick of cinnamon, a tsp of ginger, nutmeg, vanilla, coconut or chocolate extract. Store in a shampoo bottle.

Simple Soothing Milk and Honey Bath

Ingredients:

2 Cups of Dry Milk Powder (I use organic)

2 TBSP of Dried Honey Powder (I use HoneySweet Brand)

2 Cups of Finely Processed Oats (I use my food processor)

12-20 drops of essential oil (I use half lavender and half rose)

Mix milk and honey powder in large bowl. I use a whisk. Add essential oil, mix well and put in a plastic bag or tightly covered jar. Let the powder absorb the oil for at least 24 hours. Add ½ cup under the tap while you're running your bath. This is a good bath powder for children, although I omit the essential oil for children under 2, just in case it irritates them.

Make Your Own Wipe Solution

!±8± Make Your Own Wipe Solution

Wipe solutions are so simple to make and save money! Use to wash sticky hands and faces dirty and dirt floors. Unlike commercial wipes, these recipes do not contain alcohol or chemicals, and a good smell. With these recipes on cloth wipes or disposable wipes and save your more money! Disposable Wipes for cutting, high-quality paper towels in half or leave whole for full-size wipes.

Common ingredients cloth solution:

Many cleaningsolution recipes contain similar main ingredients, which are used for the same reason in each recipe. These are the common ingredients and why they're included:

Oil: Helps the wipe glide across baby's skin and keeps skin soft Soap: Cleanses by removing all traces of urine and feces EO: (Essential Oil) Added for antibacterial and/or aromatherapy purposes. Water: The main ingredient in each recipe, cleanses the diaper area and dilutes the other ingredients
The type and amounts of oil, soap, EO and water that goes into a recipe is what gives each cloth wipe solution it's own distinct "personality". Have fun trying different recipes until you find the ones that you like best!

How to Use Cloth Wipe Solutions

When mixing solutions it works best to start with oil and end with water. The oil will coat your measuring tools so the soap slips right off. Be sure to add the water slowly or you'll end up with a ton of bubbles! Most of the time it's easiest to gently mix the wipe solution in a bottle with a cover, then pour it into the storage container.

There are many different ways to store and apply wipe solutions to your wipes, try a few of the following ideas to find the one that works best for your family. You may discover that one system works great at home and another works great away from home. Here's some ideas to get you started:

Use a spray bottle to spritz baby's bottom or the wipes. (For baby's comfort we prefer spraying the wipes) Use a bottle with a pull-up spout (like on bottled-water bottles) to dribble solution onto the wipes. Warm solution and place in an insulated container to provide warm wipes for baby. Place the solution into a commercial baby wipes container and dip wipes into the solution. Place cloth wipes in a commercial baby wipes container and pour wipes solution over wipes. A commercial baby wipes container can be placed in a wipes warmer to provide cozy warm wipes for baby.
Don't store solution or wet wipes for a long time because they can become musty and the wet wipes may even grow mildew - ewww! Check your solution and wet wipes daily, and mix smaller batches of solution frequently instead of large batches less often to avoid mustiness. We mix fresh solution once a week, store it in a bottled-water bottle, and have not had any problems with mustiness.

Liquid Castile Soap - the main advantages of an ecological soap

!±8± Liquid Castile Soap - the main advantages of an ecological soap

These days there is a general tendency to eliminate the harmful products on the market. This has led to the introduction of natural products with high flexibility. One such product is liquid Castile soap. It consists of a group of organic soaps. These soaps are made from vegetable oils such as olive oil, jojoba and coconut. This distinguishes them from other soaps that are made from animal fats. Olive Oil soap is the best among other brands of theseSoaps. It has many uses and benefits. One of these advantages is that it is made of biodegradable non-toxic components, which is helping to reduce pollution in the environment. In addition to the reduction of waste products in the finished product, the manufacturing process produces little waste, which is also biodegradable. This will make the green soap is one of the best options for those who go. The versatility of the liquid soap can be demonstrated by its many applications. This makes it useful for anyFamilies.

If you wash your hair with this soap, then enjoy the benefits of hair smooth and soft. This is because the soap contains glycerin, which is responsible for moisture retention capacity. Other uses of liquid soap are used in every home as a pet shampoo, laundry detergent and shaving cream. The manufacturers claim also some unconventional uses for these soaps, such as use as toothpaste.

Buy liquid soap should not be difficult, because the soap is readily available inlarge retail stores. You can also use the online soap at most major online retailers.
